madball - look my way

so here is my first vinyl record i got for christmas. most probably my mother-in-law got a good source of informtion on this one here, otherwise i am highly impressed by her good taste in hardcore punk music. i am really happy that i got the music on vinyl re-issue of this record. there was another one around made by german label backbite records. they had cooler colours of vinyl but mov was closer to the original pressing made by roadrunner records in 1998.

actually both pressings were not too far from the original but backbite chose different centre labels and the new roadrunner records logo on the back of the sleeve. for the sake of the details, i think the music on vinyl pressing looks better, although they changed the printed dust sleeve of the original press into a fold out insert with a band pic on the flipside.

anyway, aside with the nerd stuff. musically i have to say that this is probably the weakest madball effort in my humble opinion. not really memorable and pretty basic. we'll see if this opinion can be changed over time. it was important to have alone to complete the madball full length collection. 180g silver vinyl and numbered out of 1.500 copies. i have #500 which is pretty cool. music on vinyl. 2018.

meshuggah - chaosphere

the last meshuggah full length for this first run of re-issues. the third album from 1998 released on nuclear blast. on this album the band strayed almost completely from their thrash roots. they really began to evolve their groove-laden and polyrhythmic progressive metal for which meshuggah is known and loved for. also it is one of the most seeked after in the vinyl format.

there was no vinyl pressing in the first place. it was 1998 and already a dark time for the format. nine years later night of the vinyl dead from italy pressed 333 copies on grey splatter vinyl. a copy on discogs once sold for three hundred goddamn euros. apart from that and the super pricey "25 years of musical deviance" box set, there was simply no alternative if one desired a reasonable priced vinyl copy.

so thankfully for newer and older fans who missed out until now, nuclear blast brought us a fine re-press on which the alternative artwork is closest to the original. for the most limited colour-way of the run, nuclear blast pressed another marble edition. i would probably call it clear orange with black smoke but who cares anyway? housed in a gatefold sleeve and looking sharp. 300 copies pressed. nuclear blast. 1998/2018.

meshuggah - destroy erase improve

the second installment of the nuclear blast re-issue campaign on early meshuggah releases. well, actually it is just my second piece of vinyl from the haul. nuclear blast did also re-issues of the of the self-titled e.p. and the "none" e.p. but i didn't bother with them. maybe i'll regret that move but right now i don't feel like they are essential to me.

on this second full length meshuggah took the musical ingredients of the first record and worked them into the next level. the experimental force and the will to wander new paths were and still are remarkable. an album that is rightfully placed among the best progressive rock albums of all time by the rolling stone magazine. check out the record in its full glory here.

again the original artwork was re-worked by artist keerych luminokaya who also did the original artwork for "koloss". usually i am always a fan of the original artwork, as ugly as it might be. but in this case, i think luminokaya did a great job. reminds me a bit of the terminator. the vinyl colour is so lovely as well. gorgeous grey marble on slick 180g double vinyl lp's. the whole package is limited to 300 copies. nuclear blast. 1995/2018.

meshuggah - contradictions collapse

merry christmas, my fellow vinyl nerds. before i will post my vinyl related christmas gifts (obviously there had been a few), i will take some time and honour a band i really began to appreciate with their last full length called "the violent sleep of reason". meshuggah from sweden is the band in question. after i got my copy of the aforementioned record and was blown away by it, i actually wanted to grab some more vinyl of these progressive metal masters.

little did i know that this was going to be a real pricey path i planned to walk down so vividly in the first place. just after the first steps, which meant to see what options were available on discogs, disillusion settled in. even lesser limted colour versions of "koloss" or "obzen" sell for high double digit, sometimes even triple digit amounts. so i threw in the towel, hoping for lucky ebay finds of re-issues. nuclear blast heard my prayers and came up with what i hope to be the start for a re-issue campaign of all the meshuggah full lengths.

i bought the first three records of the band, starting with "contradictions collapse" from 1991. what a killer record this is. i was worried beforehand because it is often referred to as thrash metal. but man this term is such a limitation for this progressive masterpiece. the polyrhythms are already there and i love the hardcore-esque gang shouts throughout the album. fantastic debut! a shame nuclear blast re-issued this with a re-vised artwork but beggars can't be choosers. 300 copies pressed on clear with white and black splatter vinyl. nuclear blast. 1991/2018.

queensrÿche - operation: mindcrime

wacken 2019 already casts its shadows. it is going to be the 30th anniversary of the festival and the wacken bookers already confirmed a good lot of bands for the coming year. one of the very early groups were queensrÿche. i knew the band only by their name but never actually took the time for a proper listen. so i informed myself about them. it became obvious that their third full length "operation: mindcrime" was widely considered their opus magnum.

it is based on an elaborate lyrical concept and was stated as progressive metal. this seemed to tick all the right boxes. a few weeks ago i was at the christmas staff party of my job. the whole staff drove to bremen to visit the christmas market. we had a bit time to kill before we would all meet up again for eating and drinking. as i knew the hot shots records store from a former visit of the city, i knew beforehand that i was going to spend some time there.

next to a nice copy of yes' "tales from the topographic oceans", i found a lovely original press of "operation: mindcrime" for a very decent price. the cover sleeve and the printed dust sleeve are in great conditions considering their age. the vinyl has a few hairlines and a little bit of surface noise at times but plays really good. musically the a-side is a scorcher. wow, fine balance between traditional heavy metal and progressive elements. the b-side falls a bit flat in comparison but is good as well. the lyrical concept is a real thriller, check this sucker out. emi records. 1988.

type o negative - bloody kisses

a re-issue that many people were waiting for. as i really just started getting into type o, this one came in quite handy. "bloody kisses" was one of the most commercial succesful full length releases of the band and gained a cult status throughout the years. therefore original copies from 1993 don't sell for under two hundred bucks at the moment and even re-issues from the late 00's can fetch up to one hundred euros. way too much for me, so i can just say thanks to music on vinyl for this slick pressing right here.

musically this is an awesome piece of goth tinged metal. or is it even metal? i don't know. what i know is that this record makes heavy and dark music feel light and easy, and in this lies its sheer brilliancy. "christian woman" is such a fantastic opener and in its full length way better than the edit version, i know from "the least worst of" comp i bought earlier this year. the rest are no stinkers as well, by far not. from the laid back "summer breeze", over the ironic "we hate everyone" to the beatles homage "can't lose you", this record is perfection.

this music on vinyl edition does the album justice. the records are housed in a wonderful reverse board gatefold with a lovely haptic and is made as a replique of the original, which is just my taste. even the old roadrunner logo was used. instead of printed dust sleeves, mov came up with a lovely booklet with some extended artwork. as an extra they threw in an art print of the cover picture. sharp presentation all around. heavy duty silver double vinyl, numbered and out of 6.666 copies. music on vinyl. 2018.

blind guardian - a night at the opera

an impulse buy - this is why i call this album by blind guardian my own now. i am not really familiar with this band, to be honest. one of my best buddies likes them quite a lot, he's got a lovely clear lime green copy of "a twist in the myth" which we used to listen to quite often and we saw them playing wacken festival in 2017, i believe. so these were my points of contact with this german heavy metal powerhouse.

i wasn't aware of the fact that the band is around for almost thirty five years. little did i know that blind guardian is with over two and a half million sold records one of the most succesful german bands in metal. so obviously all these aspects didn't suck me into buying this re-press. it was actually the somewhat cool cover art and the vague feeling that this was up my alley that made me open my wallet.

i wasn't let down for sure. musically the guardian is a force of nature. wow, their songs are blasting out of the speakers. that rolling double bass and the heavy riffing pushes one against the wall, while their epic melodies lifts one up again. utterly intense, a great record this is. "a night at the opera" was actually released in 2002 by virgin records and is now re-issued by nuclear blast with revised artwork for the back cover and out of 500 copies. 2018.

at the gates - slaughter of the soul

earache records from the u.k. released some real classic metal albums in the late eighties and early nineties. therefore original copies always go for quite a penny. i am after some of those splatter re-issue series from 1992 and made the step already for some gems like a bolt thrower "realm of chaos" first press or an entombed splatter "left hand path" copy. at the moment i am too busy buying recent re-issues and new releases, there is just no money left in the budget for such heavy hitters.

at the gates "slaughter of the soul" is such a metal classic released by earache. first press copies changed owners for over one hundred bucks over at discogs. i definitely did not want to go into these financial spheres with that record. fortunately earache shapes an aggressive re-issue policy and also fortunately i had a good amount of bonus points at my nuclear blast member account waiting to be burned. when i bought the new unearth and deathrite records, i joyfully added this new pressing to my cart for free.

musically there is nothing to say which hadn't been said before. "slaughter of the soul" is a flawless milestone in the melodic death metal genre of the swedish school. check it out for yourself if you shamefully missed out on it until now. seventh press coming on clear red vinyl and is out of 1.500 copies. the overall presentation is basic but looking sharp. slip cover sleeve, printed dust sleeve and a promotional flyer which will be cool to look at in twenty years. earache records. 1995/2018.

deathrite - nightmares reign

the fourth full length of deathrite. i have all the previous ones and they evolved from complete grindcore massacre on "deathrite" and "into extinction" into a more death metal orientated monster on "revelation of chaos". but to be honest, i had a hard time to find any songs of that records in my long time memory. i do enjoy them but nothing really stucks in my head. so i made this new album my make-it-or-break-it release. burn down the house or forget about them.

well, the first thing that hits one like a sledge hammer when listening to "nightmares reign" is the production. wow, pretty low-fi. it's rumbling at all ends and sounds very unpolished and raw. next thing is the song-writing. it is like a different band. loads of black metal parts, a bit grindcore and less death metal. but everything smoothly balanced and with a distinctive design. i still don't know if it is my taste but the band definitely took a bold step with that record without losing their integrity.

usually i love band evolution like that and i think, "nightmares reign" will be a grower. what is my taste without a doubt is the presentation of the album. wonderful artwork throughout the gatefold sleeve by wæik, i love the colour combinations. furthermore there is an insert with all the lyrics, a cd of the album and a folded poster with the cover art. to round out the set, century media pressed a lovely mint green 180g vinyl platter out of 200 copies. ordered through nuclear blast. century media. 2018.

unearth - extinction(s)

it is already four years since unearth released their last and very good record "watchers of rule" (wow, really?) and here we are with their newest opus going by the name "extinction(s)". it seems like this american powerhouse is stuck in the year 2004 forever. and you know what? that is just the right thing. when i dropped the needle on "extinction(s)" for the first time, i sat in awe as to how relevant this musical style can still sound in 2018.

there is a lot of reminisence of their classic "the oncoming storm" but still i do not get bored with every new album because the unearth guys simply know how to write great metalcore songs. "extinction(s)" bursts with energy, dynamic, precision and heaviness. those sweet overtunes in "incinerate" alone. i bought this record without listening to any song before, confident in unearth not going to let me down and the album pays back in equal measures.

i pre-ordered my copy at nuclear blast, even though i could have ordered the version limited to 100 copies from century media directly. i did so firstly because i had the chance to order a few more records from nb in one go and secondly because this lesser limited version looks so sweet. semi-translucent orange vinyl out of 200 copies as the perfect match to the artwork. seventh full length and this time completely released via century media. 2018.
